Stuck in my room

Hulbert Travels - Wearing a mask

I am currently feeling very displaced. Many things have happened over the last month. One moment I am backpacking through central Europe and the next, I find myself trapped in my tiny room back in Singapore. What happened exactly?

After a week of reflection, I am finally ready pen down my thoughts. On 19th February 2020 I flew into Berlin. I had on hand my backpack, a little cash and a return flight booked for 90 days later. There was no real plan, I just went with the flow and things kind of worked out. I was just busy living life.

I hopped from country to country, meeting amazing people and going on all sorts of adventures. The only things I needed to worry about were getting food in my tummy and finding shelter for the night. I finally had the freedom to do whatever I wanted. There was no restriction. I simply woke up in the morning and asked myself what I wanted to do each day.

Then it happened, the Coronavirus started spreading throughout Europe. The continent, which I so loved because of borderless travel, started locking down. Border crossings between countries were shut and tourists were barred from entering certain countries. I found myself in Budapest during this troubling time. The streets were empty and all attractions were closed indefinitely.

I knew that this would be the last stop and my journey would have to end prematurely. There was simply no where else to run to. I booked the first flight out and on 18th March 2020 I was on an aircraft bound for Singapore. I was served with a 14 day Stay Home Notice upon setting foot in this country. This meant that I had to quarantine myself in my room for the next two weeks.

I spent the first couple days sitting by my window staring into the distance. I had not quite accepted that I was stuck in the very place I was trying to escape from. What was I supposed to do now?

I started this blog on a plane and I had not truly sat down and asked myself what I wanted it to be. Was this to be a travel blog? Is it merely a platform for me to share my thoughts and feelings? Maybe it is a bit of everything. This is my life and this site has been created to share the things which interest me. There is nothing fancy about the setup, I am just putting some words on a screen, for other people to read on another screen. I think that is kind of beautiful.

In the posts which follow, I shall talk about the places I have been to, the people I met and the adventures we shared. My trip may have ended sooner than I would have hoped for but the experiences I had are very special to me and I believe that meaningful encounters shape our lives.

The future may seem uncertain. People wonder when will normalcy return to their lives. I question when I will be able to get back on the road. I know my freedom is out there and I shall get back to it soon. It is just life and it is about time I get back to living.

Chasing Firsts

Chasing Firsts

Life is full of firsts, which you only get to experience once. There are periods filled with many firsts and slower periods with fewer firsts, such is the ebb and flow of life. I am grateful for all the periods and all the firsts. We only have this one life after all.

This was by far one of my greatest hiking adventures yet. Join me as I hike a total of 26 kilometres through the Julian Alps with a stranger. It is a story of hiking and friendship you do not want to miss!
