I usually write about my travel experiences but I am going to try something different today. The focus of this article shall be my favourite hat. You may have already noticed that I love wearing hats. I always have a hat on, wherever I am going. They look great and are also extremely useful when it comes to traveling. I own quite a few hats but today, I would like to talk to you about my favourite red baseball cap.

My dear red cap has accompanied me on many adventures over the last 3 years. It has traveled with me to Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland and countless other countries in Europe. I have been hiking with it. I have been snowboarding with it. It has shielded me from the sun and protected me from the rain. Needless to say, we have been through a lot together. It is definitely not as new as it once was but it brings me a special kind of comfort and I would not embark on a journey without it.
The Hulbert Hat
You may be wondering what is so special about this simple red cap or how I could possibly spend an entire post talking about headwear. This hat is of great significance to me because of what it represents. If you look closely, you can see my name, written on the back. Growing up, I used to have a similar hat with my name embroidered on it. My dad had given it to me as a gift, upon returning from one of his trips.

I loved that hat. I wore it everywhere; imagine the happiest little boy in his cute little cap. It was my father who introduced me to the joys of traveling. He told me stories of great adventures from his younger days. My dad taught me the value of happiness and freedom, two things which I hold above all else today. He told me that the world was my playground and all I had to do was go out there and enjoy myself.
I continue to live this way, forever young. Happiness and freedom are the two things I value most in the world and I hope that it remains this way, for a long time to come. I was disappointed when my tiny little head began growing bigger; the hat which my father got me no longer fit. It only made sense that I acquired a new one. This is what the hat represents to me: happiness and freedom. That is why I love it.
Where I got it:

It was December 22, 2017 and I was at Santa Monica, watching the sunset. That moment seems so far away right now; the word ‘covid’ had yet to have been introduced into my vocabulary. I had just graduated from high-school and I distinctly remember the feeling as I gazed out at the Californian sunset. “Anything is possible”, I thought to myself. I have come some ways since then but I maintain the same belief. No matter how bleak things may seem, don’t ever give up on your dreams.
I must have been walking along Santa Monica Boulevard, when I popped into a Lids to pick up a new hat. I probably paid way too much for the embroidering but I remember being extremely content with my purchase. It boggles me how my mind recalls certain events so vividly. I usually have a mental image which I associate with the feelings of that day. This was the day of a beautiful sunset and a new hat. It may not seem like much but that day brought me much happiness.
Why I always wear a hat while traveling:

As you can see, I have a lot of hair, and sometimes, it does get in the way. It can get pretty messy in windy places such as the Netherlands. I learnt this the hard way during my first trip to Amsterdam back in 2018. My hair was all over the place and I was constantly brushing it out of my eyes. Since then, my faithful red cap has helped me tame my hair. I love keeping my hair long so hats really are my best friend.
When you are traveling, you do not want to be spending a lot of time getting ready in the morning. Wearing a hat removes the need for me to apply any product into my hair and helps me prepare for the day much quicker. It also comes in handy whenever you need to shield your eyes from the sun or protect your face from the rain.
Aside from the countless practical applications, hats also look cool. I have all kinds of hats, from baseball caps to cowboy hats. I just really love the way I look while wearing a hat. They make me feel complete. My red baseball cap has become something of a travel essential for me and I definitely will not be going anywhere without it.
I hope that you enjoyed this short piece. I know it is a little different but hopefully you managed to learn more about me and the story behind my favourite red baseball cap. Have a great day ahead and subscribe down below!
